When Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was knocked out of the national title game last week, it was obviously a huge
disappointment to him, the rest of the team, and Texas fans. The hangover from the loss is only now beginning to dissipate. Normally we see Colt being interviewed at the end of a game that he has just won, and he is quick to thank God for the opportunity and the win. This time however, during his end-of-game interview he was largely speechless.
Colt had clearly worked hard for the dream of playing in a national title game all his life. And when finally reaching that stage, the opportunity was stripped from him after five plays. In his post game interview, he seemed to be searching for answers to “why me?”
Colt McCoy playing football is similar to an entrepreneur working on his or her startup. Football and the startup venture are often all consuming. There are up and down days – high highs and low lows. But each day is just a day – it shouldn’t define you. Neither should your startup. I’m happy to see that Colt is moving forward, getting ready for the NFL combine next month.
As entrepreneurs, we need to do the same – always press forward. Don’t get discouraged by the bad days and celebrate the victories whenever possible. And be more as a person than your business.
